Exploring Countries and Cultures, First Edition (ECC) is designed for students up through 6th grade. We have the following recommendations to adapt ECC to provide a full, rich curriculum for your 7th or 8th grader. (These adaptations are not scheduled in the first edition teacher's manual.) You will also need the 7th-8th Grade Supplement package.
Bible
Geography
- Follow the ECC plan. (Maps and Globes, Geography from A to Z, and Wild Places are simpler books that are not required.)
- Add a resource for higher-level information for each country. We recommend World Book Encyclopedia DVD-ROM. However, if the student doesn't have access to a computer, he may use encyclopedias from a library. Record and organize the information you gather by completing a Country Summary Sheet for each country studied in ECC. (Click here for a sample.)
- Use the World Facts and Landmarks Flashcards.
- Develop library research skills by completing the continent packets from World Geography (included with ECC).
- Write a country report for 4 weeks; choose any country. For ideas, use Writing a Country Report written for Grades 3-6, but useful for junior high research.
Current Events/Geography
- Read “Top Story,” a Christian monthly current events news magazine from God’s World News. Use a map to locate all geographic areas mentioned in the articles and test reading comprehension with the weekly tests that come with it. Students might clip out the international articles and file them by continent in their geography notebook.
Science
Art/Music
- If appropriate, let your older child help plan and teach the art and music from ECC to their younger siblings.
- Use Global Art from ECC if your student has an interest.
Math
Language Arts
- Add literature guides from Progeny Press. We suggest choosing only two per year (less than they recommend) to allow time for formal grammar study. When selecting the literature guides, first determine your child's reading level and then, if possible, select books with an international setting.
- Focus on grammar instruction, using the following two-year sequence (available from My Father’s World):
All-in-One English Series An excellent, simple-to-use, first-year course that teaches all eight parts of speech and reviews capitalization and punctuation. For 6th grade or a 7th grader with no formal grammar instruction.
Applications of Grammar Thorough coverage of parts of speech, diagramming, and more. Includes workbook and answer key. Follows the above book; for 7th or 8th grade.
- Independent reading to correlate with countries studied in ECC. Our 7th-8th Grade Supplement includes four inspiring, “can’t-put-it-down” books. Second Edition ECC schedules the books (and Progeny Press literature guides) as follows:
- Progeny Press literature guides - Weeks 1-8
- Bruchko (South America) - Weeks 9-11
- The Narrow Road (Europe) - Weeks 12-16
- Progeny Press literature guides - Weeks 17-22
- I Dared to Call Him Father (AsiaPakistan) - Weeks 23-26
- Peace Child (AsiaIndonesia) - Weeks 29-34
- Include the student in the family read-aloud time for the Christian Heroes set in the Deluxe Package.
- Spelling Power (if needed) and Writing Strands
