Why Did Solomon Ask for Wisdom?

You"re probably familiar with these verses: “… God appeared to Solomon and said to him, ‘Ask for whatever you want me to give you.’ Solomon answered God, ‘… Give me wisdom and knowledge, that I may lead this people. …’ ” (2 Chron. 1:7-10)

Have you ever wondered why Solomon asked for wisdom? He could have asked for anything – riches, fame, long life, peace. Why did he ask for wisdom?

Did you know that when Solomon was a young child, his father (King David) taught him to seek after this? Solomon tells us, “For I too was a son to my father, still tender … then he taught me, and he said to me, “Take hold of my words with all your heart … Get wisdom, get understanding … Do not forsake wisdom, and she will protect you … Get wisdom. Though it cost all you have, get understanding.” (Proverbs 4:3-7)

A word to parents: You have been entrusted with precious children, children of the King. Your words, your actions, have great power to motivate them. As you speak to them at the dinner table, in the car, plant words of life in their hearts, words that will shape their choices when they are older. Like David and Solomon, be intentional as you prepare your children to live a life of destiny.
